A novel physiotherapy-led prehabilitation service: an evaluation

Background: Prehabilitation has been shown to improve functional capacity.1 This demonstrated reduce postoperative complications, hospital length of stay, and emergency admission rates.2 There is currently poor evidence on the effect health-related quality life.3 Methods: In 2019, University Hospitals Bristol Weston (UHBW) set up a physiotherapy-led prehabilitation service those listed for major surgery. Initial assessments are predominantly carried out face face, in surgical clinics. Assessment includes screening physical, nutritional, psychological risk factors. Personalised exercise programmes, targeted smoking, alcohol, wellbeing support provided. Follow-ups predominately conducted over phone weekly basis. Outcome measures completed at start end intervention. These include, 30-s sit stand test, grip strength, EQ5D-5L. aims measure overall capacity, life. Here we look change score from prehabilitation. Results: A total 795 patients (average age 67 yr) have enrolled our programme 20-month period. Surgical specialities include: colorectal, thoracic, upper gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, head neck.
